As we’ve said, the general rule of thumb is that you should bring 2 gallons of water (around 7.5 liters) for each person on the camping trip, each day.

Let’s look at an example. If you’re going on a camping trip with one other person for three days, then you will need 4 gallons of water a day. This means that, in total, you should bring 12 gallons of water with you.

On the other hand, if you’re going camping with your two kids, and you’re going to be away for four days, then the numbers are different. Each of the three people will need 2 gallons of water, which is 6 gallons a day. For four days, you will need to bring 24 gallons of water – which is a lot! But it is essential.

You might be wondering why a person will need 2 gallons of water per day for a camping trip. Naturally, a good amount of it is for cooking and cleaning, but an important amount will be for drinking. So how much water does a person need to drink each day?

The general rule is that a person should drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day. This should equal around half a gallon of water, which is around 2 liters. As you can see, this is only around a quarter of the amount you’re bringing for each person each day. Is the rest of it for other uses?

Well, not quite. When you’re camping, you need to take into account other factors. For example, you’ll probably doing a fair few activities, walks, or climbs while you’re outdoors – which could be more exercise than you might be getting at home.

When you exercise, you need more water to stay hydrated. On top of that, sweat makes us lose liquid.

Additionally, you’ll need to account for the temperature. You might be camping in the hot summer, in a hot region of the country. When it’s hot, you need to hydrate more, because your body loses moisture more quickly.

For this reason, there should be extra drinking water accounted for in the 2 gallons that you’re bringing per person per day, which is why it’s a much larger number than the typical hydration amount.

If you go backpacking or hiking during your trip, be sure to bring more than enough water with you.

Staying Hydrated

Once you’ve got your drinking and cooking water catered for, you can use whatever is left for washing and cleaning. Hygiene is especially important when camping, because you won’t have your typical restroom. You can use the water for washing your hands and brushing your teeth, as well as washing your body.

At the same time, you’ll want some water to wash up your dishes and cooking equipment. If you eat and cook from dirty utensils, it’s dangerous.
