When most of us think of America’s East Coast, our minds quickly go to large urban areas like New York, Boston, and Washington.
However, there is so much more to offer, particularly when it comes to impressive landscapes, white-sand beaches, and big national parks.
The best way to explore the wild East Coast terrain and the breathtaking coastline is by camping.
Whether it be in a tent, RV, or van, there are amazing camping sites right the way along the East Coast, making it a great place for a camping vacation.
However, with so many epic camping sites to choose from, knowing where to stay can be challenging. Luckily for you though, we’re here to help!
In this post, you’ll find a list of the best camping sites on the East Coast. We’ll show you popular camping grounds, RV resorts, beach camping sites, and so much more.
Let’s get started!
1. Acadia National Park Campgrounds
Found on the northeastern coast of Maine, this national park is home to dense forests, wild oceans, wildlife, and impressive sights.
The main campground at Acadia National Park is Blackwoods Campground but there are a total of four campgrounds to choose from.
Blackwoods Campground has plenty of space for RVs and motorhomes, as well as tent pitches.
The site has enough room for 60 RVs and 221 tents. In terms of the surroundings, you’ll only be a 10-minute walk to the ocean and you’ll have easy access to a wide range of hiking trails.
2. Cape Porpoise Islands Campground
Many islands around Maine offer island camping but one of the best is the Cape Porpoise Islands. Here, you will find the most amazing primitive campsites that have no facilities.
Camping in a tent is free on the Cape, Trotts, and Vaughn’s Islands, with each island having three campsites. Every campsite has ocean-front views and wild adventures waiting for you.
These remote islands give you the perfect opportunity to escape the daily grind and enjoy nature, so what are you waiting for?
3. Hither Hills State Park
Not only does this park have plenty of camping facilities for you to make use of, but there are also lots of things for children to do.
Your children can play in the sea, explore the pine forests, ride their bikes, and play field games.
In terms of camping facilities, Hither Hills State Park is great. The park has 189 campground sites that allow tent, RV, motorhome, and van camping.
Campsites are for dry camping and they can cater for RVs up to 30 feet long.
Within walking distance of the ocean, every campground here has showers and toilets. Unfortunately, pets aren’t allowed on-site.
4. Libby’s Oceanside Camp
No matter where you stay on the site, you’ll be treated to unparalleled views of the Atlantic.
You’ll be able to hear the waves crashing against the coast, and there are plenty of landmarks to check out in the area.
Unlike other campgrounds on our list, Libby’s is also close to local restaurants and shopping centers.
All RV sites have a full hook-up with water, electricity, and waste disposal. The campground itself also has showers, bathrooms, and private access to the beach.
There isn’t anything to dislike about this campsite.
5. Beverly Beach Campground
The best is probably the Beverly Beach State Park Campground. Tucked away between Cape Foulweather and Yaquina Head, Beverly Beach Campground is one of the largest in the state.
Some of the campsites found within this campground sit just steps away from miles of undisturbed Florida coastline.
As a result, this is an excellent campground for nature lovers who want to try and spot whales and other species of marine life.
All the campsites in this campground have full hook-up cement pads, beachfront options, and washing facilities. Most sites have laundry facilities, clubhouses, and stores too.
6. First Landing State Park Campground
It must also be said, this is one of the most versatile campgrounds too. Visitors can pitch a tent, park up their van, hook up their RV, or stay in luxury yurt and cabin accommodation options.
This is a wonderful park because you can explore the wilderness, visit historic sites, relax by the campfire, and play games with your family. Everything about this campground is amazing.
7. Four Mile Creek State Park Campground
The Four Mile Creek State Park Campground is only 15 miles north of Niagara Falls but out the way enough that you can escape the crowds after your visit.
The park is only minutes away from Old Fort Niagara which is the oldest continuously occupied military site in North America.
Here, you and your family can step back in time watching historical reenactments.
This campground offers 275 campsites in both sunny and shady areas. Campsites come equipped with showers, toilets, and laundry facilities, and there is room for both tents and RVs.
We highly recommend walking one of the trails along the Lake Ontario shoreline during your stay. The views are incredible.
8. River’s End Campground
Campsites are equipped with full hook-up, cable TV, and Wi-Fi. As you would expect, they also offer laundry services, bathrooms, and other facilities.
This campground even has a fitness center, swimming pool, and gift shop.
To put it simply, River’s End has something for everyone.
Tybee Island offers the most amazing island vibes, giving travelers the chance to enjoy crystal-clear waters and white sand beaches.
It’s worth noting that Savannah is only a short drive away from this campground, so there are plenty of restaurants and shops nearby too.
9. Cape Hatteras National Seashore Campground
Cape Hatteras National Seashore has four different campgrounds, all of which sit within the park.
Every campground here has campsites suitable for tents, trailers, vans, and RVs. Of course, the campgrounds also have basic amenities such as bathrooms and showers, and electricity hook-ups.
The beauty of camping in Cape Hatteras is that you’re never too far away from breathtaking sea views and a stunning East Coast coastline.
As a result of this impressive coastline, the campgrounds can get booked up quickly.
With that in mind, try to book your site as far in advance as you can.
10. Cedar Creek Campground
The final East Coast camping location on our list is Cedar Creek Campground in New Jersey. There are a variety of different campsites here, most of which are suitable for trailer, tent, and RV camping.
Most campsites offer dry camping facilities that include water and electricity hook-ups. Some campsites also offer full hook-ups that include waste disposal.
The Cedar Creek Campground has plenty of things for families to do. When you’re not out exploring the local area, you can cool off in the pool, take part in various activities, or enjoy a bite to eat in the local cafe.
The bay isn’t too far away either so you could hike or bike there and rent a kayak for the day.
